Employment for Postgraduate Student Midwives in 2011

Are you a registered nurse? Are you considering applying for post graduate midwifery training and want to work in an environment that is interesting, rewarding and challenging? The ideal place to consider is Northern Sydney Central Coast Health (NSCCH)!

From 2010, recruitment to midwifery student positions in most hospitals in NSW will occur through a centralised online process facilitated by the Nursing and Midwifery Office (NaMO) in NSW Health.  Successful applicants will commence their employment in 2011. 

The Midwifery Service in NSCCH

The Maternity Services within NSCCH provides a professional service that educates, empowers, and provides women-centred care. Women and their families are supported through pregnancy, labour and birth, and postnatally. Midwifery encompasses primary health care principles as well as emotional and social aspects of birth. Our maternity services are guided by the Department of Health policies, NSCCHS and local guidelines which are evidence-based and support best practice.

Innovative Midwifery Models of Care are offered within the NSCCH Maternity Services. We are responsive to contemporary trends and challenges in healthcare.

The Postgraduate Student Midwifery Program at NSCCH

There will be four Maternity Services within NSCCH that will employ postgraduate student midwives for training in 2011. These include maternity services from: Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH)/Ryde Hospital, Northern Beaches Health Service, Hornsby Hospital (HKH) and Central Coast Health (CCH). These four maternity services have been teaching facilities for undergraduate and postgraduate midwifery students for a long time and are committed in ensuring that all students receive the best opportunities during their learning experience.   The skilled and supportive staff will also provide a dynamic learning environment enabling the student midwives to become safe and competent practitioners.

Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH)/ Ryde Hospital Maternity Service

RNSH is a level 6 tertiary referral centre with approximately 2500 births a year. This hospital caters for normal risk and high risk women. There are 4 assessment rooms, 7 delivery rooms and 33 postnatal/antenatal beds.

The Graduate Diploma of Midwifery Students will be offered rotations in Birthing Suite, Antenatal clinic, Antenatal ward, Postnatal ward, Midwifery Support Program, Midwifery Group Practice, Neonatal Intensive Care and our specialised Maternal Fetal Medicine Unit.

RNSH also offer an optional opportunity for clinical experience at Manly hospital for 2 weeks. During the program monthly education sessions and meetings are conducted to offer support.

Northern Beaches Maternity Service

Northern Beaches Maternity Service (currently based at Manly Hospital) attends approximately 1500 births per year. This is a level 4 Maternity Unit providing care for women with normal to medium risk has referral pathways to Royal North Shore tertiary maternity service for higher level care.

Midwifery students gain experience in all areas of the Unit.

These include: Antenatal Clinics – dedicated student clinics, midwife (including community clinics) and medical clinics Birthing Unit, Postnatal / Antenatal inpatient ward, Special Care Nursery – caring for babies from 34 weeks gestation and Midwifery Support Program (postnatal home visiting)

Students are also offered an opportunity for a two week secondment to Royal North Shore to work in the Maternal Fetal Medicine Unit and the Birthing Unit.

The Unit also offers CenteringPregnancy® – a model of antenatal care that provides continuity of midwifery care in groups, which students are encouraged to attend. It is anticipated that by 2011 the Unit will offer Midwifery Group Practice.

Hornsby Hospital Maternity Service

Hornsby Hospital is a level 4 Maternity Service with an annual birth rate of 1200-1300. This hospital offers a variety of midwifery and medical models of care with Midwifery Group Practice anticipated in 2011.

During your midwifery training you will rotate through all areas of maternity care, in order to provide you with a comprehensive midwifery experience.

Hornsby Hospital’s student midwifery model of care is called SWIM. The SWIM clinic (Students with Women Innovative Model with Midwifery Education) is a student led and student run clinic under the guidance of a midwifery educator and midwifery consultant. It is an Innovative model of care, which has been a specific Initiative of Hornsby Hospital Maternity Unit. It has been awarded a scholarship from NaMO in 2007-2008 and is under continuous evaluation. As a student midwife at Hornsby, it is the expectation that you work as part of a small group practice in this continuity of care model through the continuum of antenatal, birth and the postnatal period.

Central Coast Health Maternity Service

Central Coast Maternity Services incorporates a level 5 Maternity services at Gosford and a Midwifery led unit at Wyong Hospital with an annual birth rate of 2800.Gosford hospital Maternity services provides midwifery care for women low risk and high risk women and newborns from 33 weeks gestation. All Midwifery students will be rotated through Antenatal Clinics, Birthing Unit, Postnatal / Antenatal inpatient ward and Special Care Nursery. Central Coast has a range of midwifery models of care and is committed to providing best practice midwifery care to women and their families.

Application Process

As part of Nursing and Midwifery Office (NaMO) in NSW Health centralised online application process, you will be asked to nominate three (3) hospitals where you want to train as a midwife in order of preference. There are four (4) hospitals listed for NSCCH, please consider carefully and make an informed choice.

Interview Process

The interview process is competitive and you should be well prepared. The successful applicant will be employed as a student midwife, Graduate Diploma in Midwifery on a temporary fixed term contract, working 32 hours per week.

Interviews will be held in two venues for NSCCH recruitment:

1) Gosford Conference Centre:

  • Monday 20th and  Tuesday 21st September 2010

2) Level 5, Kolling Building Royal North Shore Hospital

  • Thursday 16th and Friday 17th September 2010

Please note: At interview you must be able to provide proof of current registration as a nurse with the NSW Nurses and Midwives Board (or national equivalent).

Employment condition

  • Temporary contract working 32 hours per week up to 12 months.
  • Student Midwives are on-call for births in relation to the continuity of care experience. The NMB requires that all Graduate Diploma of Midwifery students provide care for 15 women through the continuum. This may be in addition to paid work hours.

A supportive learning environment

You will have access to Educators, Mentors, Clinical Midwife Specialists, Clinical Midwife Consultants, Midwifery Unit Managers and members of the multi-disciplinary team.

Performance development and review

The performance development and review system allows you to reflect on your practice and identify your learning needs. This will enable you in collaboration with your Manager and the Educator to develop learning strategies designed to enhance your performance.

Annual leave

2 weeks annual leave is available during the year.
